Not sure which stone or how much to order?
Which stone do I buy?
Firstly decide what type of stone you prefer, as due to our unique processing techniques a wide range of laying
styles or finish can be achieved with any natural stone that’s available.
Things to take into consideration are:-
- Colour schemes.
- Themes.
- Co-ordination with surrounding scenery and materials.
Next the type of style needs to be selected.
Style can be split into two closely related factors Profile and Mortar join. The profile of the stone means it
can be big and chunky or split down thin. This then influences to a certain degree the mortar join.
- Hand dressed - This is the traditional way of preparing stone a very high standard can be produced by hand using hand tools and a hydraulic guillotine to enable more accurate corner stone or quoins.
- Machine dressed - This is the highest form of dressed stone available each piece has been artistically sculpted
with the most modern technological equipment available to produce a flawless product
previously unobtainable using traditional techniques. Usually reserved for indoors and places where the stonework is going to be constantly in close view so needs to look perfect. It can be used for whole jobs the end result is awe inspiring.
Then mortar join:-
- Jointed - A traditional exposed mortar join with many finishes and colours.
- Recessed - A raked mortar join that has a rustic look, looks like dry-stack from a distance.
- Contemporary - A recessed mortar join made tight to resemble dry-stack laid in a modified mortar mix.
or no mortar:-
- True dry-stack - only suitable for low height landscaping and retaining
How much do I need?
The way to purchase stone through our website is to work out how much m2 of each type of stone you need.
You will need to work out how much Corner Stone, Walling Stone and Sill Stone you need and add each item
to your shopping cart separately. You work this out by using the examples below.
Example 1: Stone Wall
Total Meterage:
= (8 + 7) × 2 = 30m2
Total Linear Meters of Corners:
= 2m
Total walling stone needed:
= Total meterage - (linear meters / 2.5)
= 30 - (2 / 2.5)
= 29.2m2
Total corner stone needed:
= linear meters / 2.5
= 2 / 2.5
= 0.8m2
Example 2: Stone Pillar
Total Meterage:
= (0.5 × 4) × 4 = 8m2
Total Linear Meters of Corners:
= 4 × 4
= 16m
Total walling stone needed:
= Total meterage - (linear meters / 2.5)
= 8 - (16 / 2.5)
= 1.6m2
Total corner stone needed:
= linear meters / 2.5
= 16 / 2.5
= 6.4m2
When you are measuring the square meters of the job remember to allow for the 200mm past the surface of the substrate for the thickness of the stone. Therefore if you are measuring a wall which returns around a corner, the stone wall will be 400mm longer than the actual substrate surface due a larger perimeter.
When measuring for sills measure the linear meters (length) required, don't forget to allow for overhang on corners.
Then add 10% for a margin of error. Sill stone is cut to a standard width of 250mm unless otherwise specified so that there is 50mm of overhang to the sill.
