Mike has a strong background in all types of masonry and over sixteen years in the masonry building industry, which begun shortly after leaving school at sixteen years old. He completed his masonry apprenticeship along with formal qualifications from two different colleges and then worked as a private contractor in his home town of Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. This historic town is set high up in the Welsh valleys at the foot of the Brecon Beacon National park and mountain ranges, there are stone houses, churches, monuments and bridges hundreds of years old still used today. The stonework heritage is literally everywhere, from the old coal miners and Ironworks traditional stone cottages, slate roofing, pavements and curbstones to the Great Castles once occupied by Royalty. Over the years of being involved in the building trade he has specialised in both dry-stack and mortared natural stonework, set out and built houses with stone, bricks and blocks as the main structure. He has also done general building work, renovations on protected 'listed' buildings. As well as considerable experience in general masonry building consisting of tiling both ceramics and natural stone, plastering, slate roofing, carpentry 1st fix and 2nd fix, hard landscaping and also specialised in polished marble feature fireplaces and granite countertops.
Above left is an example of a reconstituted local Blue Pennant Sandstone walls landscape project and was one of the last jobs he worked on before moving to New Zealand in late 2003.
To the right is the historic Welsh castle 'Castell Coch' which translated means the red castle it is situated in Tongwynlais, South Wales. It was named this due to the red sandstone stone that was used in its construction.
Commercial Projects
Calum Jamieson - The Woodbox Restaurant & Bar and Mystery Creek Wines.
We have now used Stonewerx for four separate jobs now, following our first major job at our restaurant we were more than happy to use them again for both the amazing effect, workmanship and cost. We have since used them again and again for all the same reasons. I would recommend Stonewerx and exclusively Stonewerx as a stonemason for any job big or small, Not only has the workmanship been outstanding. In each instance they have all brought their own ideas, experience and thoughts on value-for-money to the job, unheard of!
Our thanks to you guys and we look forward to more work in the future.
John Lawrenson - Furnace bar & Restaurant at Victoria St, Hamilton.
Mike's workmanship played an integral part in making Furnace into one of the most recognisable restaurants in the Waikato. We get numerous comments every week regarding our central Otago schist.
Mike impressed from the outset with his commitment to quality and ongoing safety. As a result, the stone at Furnace not only looks amazing but has also been expertly reinforced to ensure longevity. Furnace was completed on very tight timeframes which Stonewerx achieved while still producing a top quality product. Since completing Furnace Stonewerx has returned to install a second fireplace which they managed to complete with almost no disruption to the business over a few mornings and evenings. It looks fantastic.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Mike or Stonewerx ltd to anyone and in my future projects I would not use anyone else.
Residential Projects
Veronica Culpan - Morrinsville
Mike Was contracted to lay approximately 45 square meters of schist on my house. I found Mike to be without a doubt true perfectionist, his work always receives comments from amazed visitors as to how straight the schist walls and corners are compared to other jobs seen.
Mike has extensive knowledge of his product and has an eye for detail. I have never come across a tradesman that is so pedantic about obtaining perfection. I will certainly use Stonewerx Ltd again when it comes to schist stonework.
